Fevers are common in children during the monsoon, from viral infections to dengue and typhoid. Most settle with rest and fluids, but a few need a doctor quickly.
See a doctor the same day if your child
- Is younger than three months and has any fever
- Has fever for more than two days
- Is unusually sleepy, irritable or hard to wake
- Has a rash, severe stomach pain, or is passing much less urine
- Has bleeding from the gums or nose
At home
Give plenty of fluids, light food and the paracetamol dose your doctor has advised for your child's weight. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin until dengue has been ruled out. Use mosquito nets and repellents, and empty standing water around the house.
